Meditation is simple and easy and is one the finest ways to de-stress yourself and to relax your body and mind. It is not a complicated technique and just requires a little practise and a quiet corner in your home.

The first step is to sit down in a comfortable spot, preferably cross legged on the floor. If you want to sit on a chair go ahead and do so. You need to be relaxed through the entire process, so be comfortable wherever you are.

Close your eyes and try to stop thinking about anything at all. If thoughts do come, let them go away and gradually you will find that fewer and fewer thoughts come in, and there are more and more quiet spaces in your mind.

Pay attention to your breathing. Let it be normal, but just imagine that with each outgoing breath you are breathing out all the disturbing thoughts and you are breathing in peace and harmony. Gradually you will realise that your breathing has become slower and gentler and that your body is much more relaxed.

Give yourself time – initially do this only for a few minutes every day. The important thing is to clear your mind, concentrate only on your breathing. Thoughts will come and go – do not pay too much attention to them.

When you open your eyes after a few minutes, you will find yourself at peace, relaxed and contented. Do this regularly, and soon stress will cease to be a part of your daily life.

Most of us correlate meditation with sages and yoga practitioners. Very few people realise what a simple process it is and how much it can help us.

There are many health and spiritual benefits from meditation. Spiritually and mentally you achieve a peace in your mind and you learn to de-stress yourself. Meditation always results in a sense of calmness and tranquillity.

Some of the physical benefits which accrue from it are as follows:

It increases the blood flow to the heart and lowers the heart rate.

For high blood pressure patients it results in lowering the BP to a normal level.

Chronic diseases such as allergies and arthritis have been helped by regular meditation.

The respiratory processes of the body are benefitted because there is an increased flow of air to the lungs.

Since the respiratory systems are improved, this helps in showing significant improvement in asthma patients.

The greatest value in meditation lies in the peace that the individual attains. When your breathing processes are evened out, when your body becomes more relaxed and you mind is also at peace, then the world seems like a much better place and happiness becomes a constant companion.

Diabetic diet always carries this notion of being sugar-free or boring food. Diabetic diet may seem like a life-sentence. However, it is not necessary that if you are suffering from diabetes, you need to follow a boring and restrictive lifestyle. A simple modification and small tweaks in your lifestyle can help you enjoy your life and also manage your sugar levels.

It is important to consider these factors if you are a diabetic:

You need to watch what you eat

How much you eat

When you eat

When your sugar-levels show high in your body, then your doctor will ask you to pay close attention to your diet and modify your lifestyle a little. This doesn’t mean that you start depriving yourself of sweets and other tasty food. There is no specific diet prescribed for diabetics. However, here are some guidelines that you can follow and still make sure that the blood-sugar levels are maintained.

It is possible that you may crave for sweets. In such cases, you can indulge in sweets once in a while. If you feel like having a dessert, share it among your friends and relatives so that you do not end up gulping the whole thing down. Eat small portions. This will not only satisfy your sweet tooth but also make sure that you do not end up with shooting sugar levels.

Sweets add to the carbohydrates. So if you are eating a sweet, balance it by cutting down on other food items that are high in carbohydrates like bread, tortillas, crackers or rice.

While eating a sweet, savor each bite so that you consume less. If you eat fast, you end up eating more than you are supposed to.

Make healthy substitutions. For example instead of soda, go for sparkling water, instead of opting for an ice-cream, grab a bowl of frozen fruits or go for your favorite cheese instead of the cake, a piece of fruit instead of a pie.

If you feel like having rice, choose brown rice instead of white rice.

Go for steel-cut oats instead of processed cereals or instant oatmeal

Balance your meals with all food groups and make sure that vegetables form the major part of the meal. Eating your carbohydrates with protein or little fat will help you control the sugar levels.

Choose sweet potatoes instead of having white potatoes as they are low in carbohydrates

Choose a bran muffin instead of eating a pastry or croissant.

Instead of having red meat take more servings of fish

If you are baking use canola oil or apple juice instead of butter or shortening.

For making your soups creamy try other methods like adding a little cornstarch instead of loading it with cream.

By cheating your brain a little bit, you can satisfy your bodily needs and ensure that you are in perfect health. Besides the above, a mild and regular exercise regime on a daily basis will help you tackle this health hazard in a much effective way.

What do you think of yourself?

Are you a good person? Do you feel inferior or do you suffer from low self esteem? Do you feel that there is a lot you can improve in yourself?

There is always something that we can do to improve ourselves. But before we do that, let us begin to understand our good points. Let us realize that we are fine human beings and we do not need to underestimate our own good points.

The first step towards improving yourself is to do a realistic appraisal of yourself. If you are honest, you will realise that you are a valuable being, you are worthy of love and before anyone else loves you, you have to love yourself.

Now, look at the areas that could be revamped a little bit. Do not think negatively, think positive. OK, I need to improve my physical appearance slightly – that is the easy part.

I need to be less critical – that is also not difficult. If you are positive about yourself, you will feel positively towards others also.

I need to have a little more self-confidence – well once you love yourself, this comes automatically.

These are but a few simplistic processes – but they only follow the first step – Love yourself.
