People do not take diabetes seriously enough and the food industry has no incentive to help. Diet is essential but it must be a part of an ongoing lifestyle not just a quick fad. Labelling should be much clearer on packaged products - not just pretty, happy lifestyle illustrations from clever ad men!

I have been living as a type 2 diabetic for 3 years now and when i was first told about the implications, including dietry it all seemed a bit daunting however i find that following just a few simple rules keeps me healthy and my sugars where they need to be, mainly I eat regulary, cut way down on high sugar foods, try to keep my fat and salt content down and make sure I eat 5 portions of fruit and veg, by following these very basic guidelines, i can lead a heatkly lifestyle without diabetes taking over.

Thanks for this info. Most of the foods out there is not diabetics friendly. I agree with Andy from best cross trainers. It is best to consume low fat, low sugar, low carbs, low everything if possible (I don't think it's possible :)) foods/beverages to ensure long life. Life is so precious once you realize it. I am type 1 but my life is normal after months of struggling. And I gotta salute to you, writer for providing this useful info and important guideline for diabetic.

Diet is an essential part but don't forget things like extremity care too, Correct shoes socks regular exercise all contribute to total well being. If you exercise like walking, excess glucose is used how it is supposed to IE energy thus requiring less insulin. Correct diet, more exercise, better circulation, better life!

Thank you so much for this information. I have several individuals in my family who suffer from diabetes. All who have it have adult onset and have struggled a bit with how to maintain a healthy diet. It's SO essential to get the right diet. I definitely agree with the point that one diet does NOT fit all. My grandfather has to maintain a very different diet than my aunt, for example. Anyway, thank you so much for this information and for helping make this info more well known. it's definitely necessary!

This is great. I believe moderation plays a huge role in our overall health.

And also, Sam from Professional Make Up:

I could not agree more. I am so disgusted with how much sodium is added to everything we eat and buy. I have been trying to get away from it but it just keeps on creeping back.

One more, record your blood glucose levels every time you test is important. Just like my grandfather.

I think it's really bad how much sugar and salt is in most of the food you by. I am not diabetic and that annoys me just because it is generally unhealthy. If I want sugar or salt in my food I can put it in myself. This must be particularly troublesome for those who are diabetic, and there's so much they can't eat.

Doctors are often held in very high regard, but be cautious. They are not the demigods they think they are. Don't always listen to your doctor. Be very keen to your body. Doctors often make mistakes. More often than you think. An overdose can cause your sugar level to drop significantly and cause you to fall into a coma or die, particularly if you make the suggested changes in your diet and take the medication as prescribed. The more strict you are the greater the risk of having an incident of hypoglacimia.

It is true that diabetes can bring certain complications which impede the normal development of daily tasks. However, with proper treatment and following recommendations indicated by your doctor, you can still enjoy a healthy life.
