Since childhood it has been drummed into us – eat your spinach and your beans if you want to be strong; do not eat junk food, it will lead to indigestion and obesity. From the time we are born eating and drinking become indispensable tools towards a happy and healthy existence.

How much attention do you pay to what you eat?

How often do you avoid foods which you know are not good for you – even though you are craving for them?

Not very often – and this is where we falter. Unless you learn to eat healthy, you are not likely to remain healthy!

Begin by shopping for healthy foods
– Buy brown bread instead of white bread, look for fat free or low fat items, buy fresh vegetables instead of frozen ones, and buy the lean cuts of meat.

Now learn to cook healthy – bake instead of frying, use less of cheese and sugar, and try to make fresh foods, use good quality non-stick pans, so that you can cook with less oil.

Eat a wide variety of foods
– Try new vegetables and fruits and whole grains. They are tasty and your body needs the various nutrients that are available in all of these.

Drink lots of water
– Not aerated drinks and tea and coffee, but just plain simple water – at least 8 glasses per day. We tend to forget to do this.

And above all – watch your calories. Try not to eat more than what you expend. The number of calories you can consume depends on your age and sex and weight and physical structure.

Health is Wealth – Preserve it

Most of us spend a lifetime trying to be become wealthy, or in trying to preserve the wealth we already have. Often we forget that we have been granted another asset which needs to be conserved and safeguarded as much as our material possessions.
Our health is our greatest wealth – take care of it.

When we are young and healthy, we feel that we can conquer the world. We do not realize that as we grow older, our body is not able to fight infection nor is it able to conserve its energies as well as before. If we have not built up our reserves when we are young, there is nothing left to fall back on in times of need.

Not only do you have to preserve your health when you are young, but also at every point in your life.

Take good care of your body, after all it is the only one you have got. Build up a reserve of nutrients by taking a multivitamin tablet every day. You shouldn’t only do this if you already know that you have something wrong with you, for example arthritis or fibromyalgia pain. Taking a multivitamin should be a habit you get into from a relatively young age. Prevention is the key and the sooner you start the more natural it will be for you to take them on a daily basis. Hopefully you will start to notice a difference in your health as well.

Build up your immunity by exercising regularly, even if you exercise for only a few minutes every day, it is worth the effort. It has been analysed and reported that the true worth of exercising shows up only after a year, because by then you have made yourself inherently stronger.

Stop smoking and drinking alcohol in excessive quantities. Once again, right now you may feel that this will not bother you at all, but at some point it is going to take a strain on your body and by then it will be too late.

Laugh and Live Happily

Have you ever seen the group of people who gather in parks and laugh loudly and clearly, on cue? They are all part of what is known as the laughter club. They gather to just laugh, a good full throated laugh, one that clears all the cobwebs from your mind, and clears your throat and lungs also.

They have got the right idea, and it would do all of us a lot of good if we follow it to some extent in our daily lives. We are not asking you to go out in the parks and laugh, all we are saying is to make laughter an inherent part of you.

Laughter helps to lighten your spirits and take some of the stress away. It makes the world seem like a much nicer place and makes you realise that gloom and doom are really not the places to be in.

Happiness is a state of mind that all of us are always running after. We can only achieve it if we feel that the world is a great place to be in. Happiness cannot enter our lives if we have forgotten how to laugh. After all, a frowning person is likely to make everyone around him also unhappy.

Laugh, at the jokes that you hear, at the comedy films that you seen, at the sight of a new born trying to put his toe in his mouth, at the joy of watching a child play with a puppy.

Laugh and the world laughs with you.

Laugh and you will make yourself and all those around you happy.

Let us put it into different words – you may be unhealthy due to some congenital problem, or due to some kind of disease that afflicts your body, or you may be suffering from some long-term illnesses, but even then, if you are happy, cheerful, eat well, and are able to cope with the daily chores of life, you can consider yourself to be healthy to some extent.

Health is not just your physical state, it also includes your mental well-being and your manner of dealing with all that is around you.

If you are not able to run around, if you are not able to play games or indulge in sports, if you cannot go for long walks due to a problem with your body’s condition, but you can still take care of yourself, you are a cheerful person and mentally you are in good frame of mind, you can consider yourself to be healthy.

It is a state of mind.

Stressed human beings do not feel that they are healthy. They may be physically fit, but mentally they are a wreck. Whereas some people with a physical disability but with a positive attitude can be in tremendous mental health.

Of course, all this does not mean that you should not aim to be healthy. After all health is your most precious asset.

But if, for reasons beyond your control, physical health is elusive, then your target should be a strong mental health , and half your battle will be over.

It does not matter how old you are; it is never too late to cultivate a good habit and make it a second nature. So what are the tips on healthy living that promotes longevity?

Water

Water is extremely important to life. More than 80% of the human body is water. Daily intake of the right quantity of water is one sure way of promoting a healthy lifestyle. For a clearer, healthier and brighter skin, the body needs a daily consumption of four litres of water daily. Water helps eliminate toxic waste. Also, avoid taking water in-between meal. You can take water before or after meal: consuming water during meal slows down digestion.

Always start your day on a brighter side by consuming two glasses of water immediately you get up from bed. This does not only help in eliminating waste but it also assist in fighting disease and dehydration.

Exercise

Exercise your body daily. Daily exercise whether mild or intense is important to the mind, body and soul. During exercise, the heart pumps blood faster to various parts of the body. The circulating blood repairs and carries oxygen to various parts of the body. Daily exercise help reduce the human body blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Regular exercise flushes the skin pores leaving your skin healthy and beautiful.

Fruits

Avoid consuming excessive fatty food. Fruits and vegetables contain essential minerals and vitamins that nourishes and keep the human body in perfect condition. In some parts of India, natives have a long held believe that industrial processed foods (i.e. canned and fast foods) are dangerous to the human health.

Temperance

Virtue lies in the middle: Too much of everything is bad. For a healthy living, there have to be moderation in everything from sex to alcohol consumption, food and work. While there is need to be moderate with the use of tobacco and alcohol, it is important to add at this point that alcohol and tobacco consumption are dangerous to human body. They eat up the internal organs of the body and distorts look. Excessive indulgence in illicit sex and masturbation weakens the male sexual power with time.

As you are aware, smoking is dangerous to your health. According to several medical findings, smokers and heavy alcohol consumers die 10 years younger than non-alcohol and tobacco smokers do.

Fears

It is very normal to be afraid. I mean let your fear guide you in a situation but do not stick in there for long. In life, we can only control few things around us. There is always an alternative to that concrete wall – at least you can go back from where you come from and try a different tunnel.

Some people bother too much. They allow the events of life to suppress their immune system and before long they start having imaginary headache which later spread to their backside. The truth is there is healing power in being cheerful and positive in all things, no matter how hopeless the situation may look like. To put short, you can always dust yourself and walk away from any trouble.

Living Healthy is a Habit

Do you lead a healthy life? Do you follow all the systems and processes which make our existence a healthy one? Or are you like most of us, follow the rules for a few days and then go back to our normal fairly unhealthy life systems.

If you look around you, you will notice that some people not only look healthy, but they also seem to have much more energy than any of the other people in their age group. These are the people who have made living healthy into a habit, not just an occasional process.

There are some habits which if we follow regularly can be of great assistance in our daily routines. These may not seem to be of much use initially, but as time goes on, they help in maintaining a healthy body and mind.

Exercise regularly: We have heard this so often that we tend to ignore it as an old wives tale. But it is by far the most important part of your routine. Either go for a walk or just do some exercises in your home. Make it into a daily routine, and an indispensable part of your morning. Soon you will find that the day you do not exercise you miss it and yearn to find those few free minutes to do at least some of the exercises.

Drink a lot of water: Water, not cold drinks or tea or coffee. Water is the best way to detoxify your digestive systems. It flushes out all the toxins from your system and helps your body move better.

Find time to sit back and relax. Keep some times aside every day for yourself, read a book, watch TV or just listen to music. Do not answer the phone, just sit with a loved one and relax.

Just a few simple steps, but if you make them into a habit, you will reap great rewards.

Stress has become so much a part of our modern day existence that we are beginning to accept it as part of our daily bread. Often we do not realize how much this stress is impacting our lives, and how it influences our reactions, and our metabolism.

It is important to destress ourselves regularly.  It takes a little bit of effort to do so, but it really is time well spent. De-stress systems help to detoxify your body and to calm you down, and make the world seem like a much better place to live in.

Here are some ways of de-stressing yourself:

Take a short nap: It really does work. Your body slows down and all the agitation seems to have vanished when you wake up.

Listen to music: Soft and sensual music, romantic melodies and even pure classical music, listen to any or all of these, in peace and quiet. Let the music be the only sound you hear, and soon you will find yourself more relaxed.

Meditation: This is much simpler than it sounds. Go into a quiet corner of the house, sit on the floor and close your eyes. Let your thoughts wander, in a little while try to stop thinking of anything.  Listen to your own mind. It really is the best way to distress yourself.

Exercise: Go for a long brisk walk, go to the gym, do some yogic asanas in your home, just expend some energy on your body. It will make you healthier and also clear your mind.

Learn to say No: Do not do anything that is beyond your capacity. Set your limits and stick to them. It is important not to take on more than your body can accept.

There are many more ways to distress yourself, find the best method for yourself. Follow it everyday and you will be a much happier person.

Monitor Your Sleeping Hours

Sleep is such an important part of our lives that we spend approximately 1/3rd of our lives sleeping. It is an integral part of our existence, and it is only when we are unable to sleep well, or do not get enough time to sleep, that we realize how much of our well-being depends on it.

Sleep deprivation has been tabulated as being the cause of many accidents. If you are deprived of sleep, you will be tired and drowsy, your reactions will have slowed down and you will be highly stressed out. This will lead to an inability to cope with daily stresses and strains and to an overall feeling of tiredness.

In order to avoid situations like these it is important that you monitor the amount of sleep you are getting. On an average most of us get about 6.5 hours of sleep every day. The recommended amount is 8 to 8.5 hours for an adult.

For your general well being and in order to lead a healthy life, it is essential that you regulate your sleep hours. The body is a slave to routine; it likes to wake up at a certain hour and go to sleep at a certain time. For the sake of your body, it is important that you try and adhere to a consistent timing; do not think that if you miss some sleep today you can make up for it later. That is not likely to happen.

Once you settle into some kind of regulated sleep routines, you will realise how much better you feel, and how you will wake up feeling refreshed and ready to face the world.
